What is virus? Types of virus & its definitions :

 

Computer Virus

VIRUS stands for   vital information resource under seize” . It is a program or set of programs that disrupts the normal operation of the computer. It enters into the computer without permission or knowledge of the user.

 

Types of viruses :-

Boot sector virus :-  A boot sector virus infects the first sector of the hard drive, where the master boot record ( MBR ) is stored.

Examples : Michelangelo, stoned, etc.

 

File/program virus:-  Some file or programs, when executed, load the virus in the memory and perform predefined functions to infect the  system. They infect program files with extensions like .EXE, .COM, .BIN, .DRV and .SYS.

 

Trojan horse :-  It is a program that acts as a malicious or harmful code. It designed to cause some malicious activity or to provide a backdoor to your system. Trojan horses have no way to replicate automatically.

Examples : Beast, Rat, Netbus, Girl friend , etc.

 

Worm :-  A computer worm is a standalone malware computer program that replicates itself in order to spread to other computers. Often, it uses a computer network to spread itself, relying on security failures on the target computer to access it.

Examples : Brontok, Code Red, Mydoom.

 

Spyware :-  it is software that secretly collects user information while on internet. Spyware can capture information like web browsing habits, email messages, user name and passwords and credit card information. Spyware does not necessarily spread in the same way as a virus or worm.

Examples : Key-Logger.

 

Adware :-  adware or advertising-supported software, is any software package that automatically renders advertisements in order to generate revenue for its author. The advertisements may be in the user interface ( UI ) of the software or on a screen presented to the user during the installation process.

 

Spam :-  These are unwanted e-mails, SMS, MMS. In other words we can call them as unsolicited promotional mail.

 

Phishing :-  it is a form of fraud in which the attacker tries to learn information such as login credentials or account information by masquerading as a reputable entity.

 

Spoofing :-  it is a type of scam where an intruder attempts to gain unauthorised access to a users system or information by pretending to be the user. It is illegal use of your e-mail address by a stranger.

 

Ransomware: -  it is a type of malware that prevents or restricts access to your computer system and demands that a ransom is paid in order for the restriction to be removed.

Examples :- Wanna-cry.
